Ceux qui y vivent le connaissent et y sont habitu\u00e9s, l\u2019oublient aussi. Ces vibrations proviennent des turbines du barrage du Seujet, \u00e0 quelques m\u00e8tres de l\u00e0. Lors d\u2019un enregistrement sonore de l\u2019espace d\u2019exposition \u00e0 vide, je cherchais \u00e0 d\u00e9terminer la fr\u00e9quence dominante de ce ronronnement. S\u2019est alors r\u00e9v\u00e9l\u00e9, \u00e0 mon sens, un paysage sonore riche, autour de cette note tenue. Un titre confidentiel.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>-Peux-tu nous expliquer le principe de l\u2019installation ?<br \/>L\u2019installation emprunte le mode de construction du haut-parleur. Un courant \u00e9lectrique traverse un fil de cuivre ; ce dernier s\u2019agitera en pr\u00e9sence d\u2019un aimant, en fonction de l\u2019intensit\u00e9 du courant. C\u2019est ainsi que fonctionne chaque haut-parleur ; la diff\u00e9rence fondamentale \u00e9tant que le cuivre se trouve g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement fix\u00e9 sur un c\u00f4ne de carton plut\u00f4t que sur des lattes de bois. Celles-ci permettent d\u2019ailleurs au son de se r\u00e9pandre dans l\u2019espace (dans l\u2019air), comme le fait la caisse de r\u00e9sonance d\u2019une guitare.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>-Qu\u2019est-ce qui dicte les qualit\u00e9s physiques de cette installation ?<br \/>En g\u00e9n\u00e9ral, certaines qualit\u00e9s architecturales me viennent rapidement aux yeux lors des premi\u00e8res visites ; elles donnent rapidement des pistes plastiques directement li\u00e9es \u00e0 des possibilit\u00e9s de diffusions.\u00a0<br \/>Par la suite, plusieurs \u00e9coutes du lieu d\u00e9finissent la r\u00e9action sonore. La dimension temporelle li\u00e9e au son prend un sens particulier vis-\u00e0-vis de l\u2019image ; cette attention au temps reste fondamentale lors de la visite de l\u2019installation.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>-Le lieu est-il important dans la pr\u00e9paration de tes projets en g\u00e9n\u00e9ral et de celui-ci en particulier ?<br \/>En principe, c\u2019est bien le lieu qui induit et donne sens \u00e0 l\u2019installation. Je tente d\u2019appliquer quelques \u00e9l\u00e9ments sonores et graphiques, de mani\u00e8re \u00e0 rendre perceptibles certaines qualit\u00e9s architecturales et acoustiques que j\u2019aurais per\u00e7ues lors d\u2019un passage ou provenant d\u2019images r\u00e9manentes.<br \/>Avoir pu profiter de Forde quelque temps avant l\u2019exposition, m\u2019as permis d\u2019envisager plusieurs projets. Unique difficult\u00e9 : se d\u00e9cider.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>-Est-ce une r\u00e9ponse aux qualit\u00e9s sonores du lieu ?<br \/>En quelque sorte, ce pourrait \u00eatre l\u2019inversion du principe de r\u00e9verb\u00e9ration.<br \/>De par son sol et ses murs \u00e0 la fois denses et lisses, Forde poss\u00e8de une forte r\u00e9verb\u00e9ration ; une source ponctuelle remplira rapidement l\u2019espace, et plut\u00f4t de mani\u00e8re chaotique. Une des possibilit\u00e9s \u00e9tait de peupler l\u2019espace, \u00e0 mon tour, de multiples sources ponctuelles. Prendre en otage l\u2019espace, et rendre visible un \u00e9cho.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>-Est-ce que tu es capable d\u2019anticiper\/pr\u00e9voir les effets ou comportements d\u2019une installation ?<br \/>Il y g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement une part de surprise d\u00e9licieuse lors de la premi\u00e8re diffusion sonore, \u00e0 la pause du mille cinquante-sixi\u00e8me haut-parleur, ou la tension du dernier fil de cuivre. Non pas une simple satisfaction d\u2019avoir achev\u00e9 une part importante du travail, mais un moment o\u00f9 la concr\u00e9tisation d\u00e9passe syst\u00e9matiquement la projection. Bien que j\u2019aie pu exp\u00e9rimenter, \u00e0 plusieurs reprises, le rapport entre ma projection et la concr\u00e9tisation, il n\u2019y a aucune accoutumance \u00e0 ce qui ne peut s\u2019exp\u00e9rimenter en atelier. Il ne s\u2019agit donc pas d\u2019anticiper ni pr\u00e9voir, mais plut\u00f4t sentir des effets possibles.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>-Te reconnais-tu plut\u00f4t dans la figure de l\u2019inventeur ou dans celle du bricoleur ?<br \/>En mal d\u2019inspiration, je d\u00e9ambule dans une quincaillerie, ou un \u00ab brico-loisirs \u00bb: porte toujours ses fruits.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>-Tu \u00e9tais tr\u00e8s oppos\u00e9 \u00e0 l\u2019id\u00e9e de pollution sonore. Quelle valeur esth\u00e9tique ont pour toi les sons que tu utilises dans ta composition ?<br \/>Je n\u2019ai pas encore pr\u00e9cis\u00e9ment d\u00e9fini ma propre limite entre pollution et \u00e9l\u00e9ments sonores [dans un sens musical]. C\u2019est pourquoi, il ne m\u2019est pas envisageable de le faire pour les autres ; la limite bruit \/ son est absolument subjective et \u00e9volue constamment. Surtout, elle est fragile. La valeur d\u2019une composition, dans un id\u00e9al, pourrait \u00eatre l\u2019instrument permettant de nous faire balancer entre ces deux perceptions.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>-Tiens-tu compte de la valeur esth\u00e9tique (scupturale) de tes installations lorsque tu les imagines ?<br \/>Cela n\u2019a pas toujours \u00e9t\u00e9 assum\u00e9 (ou conscient), mais je crois que c\u2019est maintenant r\u00e9solu.\u00a0<br \/>En r\u00e9alit\u00e9, il est question d\u2019un rapport simple entre le visuel et le sonore. Trouver un \u00e9quilibre et travailler \u00e0 ce que l\u2019un serve l\u2019autre, sans concurrence. C\u2019est aussi une forte attention demand\u00e9e au visiteur qui doit, par lui-m\u00eame, fournir un effort pour \u00e9tablir cet \u00e9quilibre.
